What is the Quran?
The word Quran is an Arabic word that means a recitation. Qur’an is considered to be God’s final revelation to mankind. It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over a period of twenty-three years, beginning in 610 CE. At first, people were reluctant to accept it because of its differences from their beliefs and practices.
However, as they saw how peaceful and compassionate, he was, they began to believe in him and what he brought from God. Eventually, his message spread throughout Arabia, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, North Africa, Spain, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan . . . all areas where Islam is practiced today. Today there are more than 1 billion Muslims worldwide who read or recite Quran on a regular basis.
Growing up, many of us were encouraged to read from our respective holy books. This was either done at home or in a religious institution. Reading from these holy books helps familiarize ourselves with their contents and provides spiritual fulfillment. We should all also be reminded that reading holy texts are always beneficial for us humans, and hence we have been advised by scholars of all faiths to read them regularly.
For those of you who are not familiar with Islam and its Qur’an, then it is important to know that according to Islamic teachings, reading the Qur’an everyday is highly recommended as part of your daily prayers (Salah). However, if you want to read more than just a couple of verses every day, you should set aside some time exclusively for reading the Qur’an.
What is Tafseer?
Tafseer is an Arabic word for an explanation, in essence, it’s a comprehensive commentary on certain passages of scripture that aims to be educational and spiritual. In our modern age, where information is readily available at our fingertips, and we can access not only a translation but also an extensive commentarial explanation of those translations all within a matter of seconds, who needs Tafseer? Plenty of people still do.
The beauty in sitting down with a qualified Islamic scholar to discuss what you’re reading isn’t just that they’ve likely spent years poring over these very words but also that they’ll often provide insights you would have never come up with on your own.
How can you discover such insights if you don’t ask questions? A qualified teacher will help you find answers, whether or not you realize there are any questions to be asked. Asking questions requires humility, which is something many of us struggle with in today’s world—but it also helps us grow as human beings and better understand ourselves and others.
Importance of Tafseer
Tafseer is one of its kind that makes us understand the meaning of difficult words or sentences. It clarifies each and every part of the verses of the Quran. This will be useful for Muslims if they want to know Islamic thoughts. The interpretations written in Tafseer are from famous Muslim scholars and Imams so that they can be trusted on it.
Understanding Qur’an will help you have strong faith in the Islam religion. It also strengthens your belief in Allah through his book, which he has sent down upon His Messenger Muhammad (PBUH). Reading different Tafseer will lead you to know each verse more clearly, its importance, and also the life lessons we can learn from them.
How can we read Quran?
Muslims of all levels, ages, and backgrounds can take advantage of reading Qur’an. Whether you have a solid foundation in Arabic or are just starting out as a beginning student, there is something for everyone. Qur’an reading has been a central practice in Islam since its early days, and even though modern technology may have made it easier to read Qur’an electronically rather than from books, there are still benefits to actually having print copies available at home or work that allow you to mark them up and make them your own.
There is an intellectual process of studying the Quran that can only be done by interacting with physical copies of it – making notes or highlighting verses to better retain them within your memory will ultimately help you gain more knowledge from what you read.
Conclusion
The message of the Quran is alive, vivid, and fresh because it is a God-inspired revelation. It addresses every aspect of human life. Our spiritual health and our intellectual growth depend on a proper understanding of its teachings. It helps us to live an Islamic way of life as well as to understand what is happening around us in a better light. We cannot afford not to read Quran daily, even if we can manage one page or two pages for twenty minutes, then it’s good enough for most people, including myself.
